The International Day Of The Boy Child through the Mentorship Lens

Some days ago, we celebrated International Day of the Boy Child. We are reminded of a truth Nigeria itself is confronting daily: boys do not become responsible men by accident. Character is not formed in silence, neglect, or through the crushing weight of unspoken expectations. It is shaped through guidance, affirmation, discipline rooted in love, and the steady presence of intentional mentorship.

Today, across our nation, we see the consequences of what happens when boys grow without direction. We see young boys drawn into cultism, violence, internet fraud, substance abuse, and destructive social pressures not always because they are inherently bad, but often because they are searching for identity, belonging, validation, and purpose in the wrong places.

A society that teaches boys to “man up” but never teaches them how to process pain should not be surprised when many grow into emotionally wounded men. A culture that glorifies wealth without integrity should not be shocked when young boys begin to chase success without values.

The boy child does not merely need correction; he needs direction.

He needs more than punishment; he needs wisdom.

He needs more than criticism; he needs affirmation that strengthens rather than shames.

Above all, he needs examples; men whose lives speak louder than their words, whose integrity becomes a blueprint for the next generation.

Across Nigeria, there are still fathers who lead with presence, teachers who sacrifice for their students, mentors who pull boys away from the streets, and community leaders who choose to invest in character over applause. These are the people quietly rebuilding the future of our nation.

Because when we neglect the holistic development of boys, we risk more than losing a generation; we risk creating a future disconnected from compassion, responsibility, and truth.

A boy left without anchor becomes a man adrift.

A boy left without purpose becomes vulnerable to any voice loud enough to influence him.

Let us therefore be intentional. Let us raise boys who value integrity above influence, purpose above pressure, and character above applause. For in shaping boys with care, wisdom, and mentorship, we are not merely raising individuals, we are shaping the future of Nigeria itself.
